About Gem State.
From the founding of Idaho State Grange in 1910, discover the history that made Gem State the insurance company it is today.
Deep roots, strong and steadily growing.
History of Gem State Insurance:
Gem State Insurance Company was originally organized by the Idaho State Grange in 1910 to provide property insurance to the members of that organization. The name at that time was Grange Mutual Cooperative Fire Insurance Company, but the name was changed to the current name recently to reflect expansion into other insurance areas.
In October 2026, Gem State Insurance merged with Bucyrus, Ohio-based Ohio Mutual Insurance Group, while retaining the Gem State brand under which the company will conduct business in Idaho.
History of Ohio Mutual Insurance Group:
Based in Bucyrus, Ohio, Ohio Mutual Insurance Group traces its roots to 1901 when the Ohio Mutual Tornado, Cyclone and Windstorm Insurance Association began providing insurance to property owners across Ohio.
In 2003, we sold our first policy outside of Ohio to a business owner in Rhode Island. Ohio Mutual added five states in New England, largely due to our 2010 acquisition of Maine-based Casco Indemnity Company and added our full line of products to Indiana in 2019. Ohio Mutual currently writes nearly $300 million in premiums each year — covering homes, autos, farms and commercial properties in seven states.
In 2020, our policyholders voted overwhelmingly to adopt a mutual holding company structure, which extends mutual membership benefits to all of our insureds.
Ohio Mutual currently writes nearly $500 million in premiums each year — covering homes, autos, farms and commercial properties in nine states.
